How to Choose the Best Gutter for Your Home

Typhoon season is here once more. In the Philippines, the heavy downpour and strong winds brought by the rainy season can wreak havoc on our roofing materials.

Aside from the roof itself, your roofing accessories must also be checked for possible damages. Even just small ones need to be repaired immediately, as these can lead to bigger structural damage.

One important part of the roof that always needs to be checked is the rain gutters. Gutters are significant in a roof’s drainage system, as they help channel water from the roof safely. This then prevents rainwater from pooling in your home’s foundation. Water removal is essential to prevent water ingress and to prevent a build-up of excessive weight.

Like many exterior parts of the home, however, rain gutters are subject to wear and tear. As a homeowner, you should always maintain your rain gutters and check if there are any small holes or early signs of rust that can lead to greater damage. You should also regularly clean your gutters. When gutters accumulate dirt and debris, they won’t be able to channel the water out onto the drainage system and might damage the foundations of the building.

Despite these efforts, there may be times wherein the gutters need to be replaced altogether. When this happens, you should always go for rain gutters that are of the best quality. Do your research before getting new ones. Search for different gutter types, materials and, costs. For example, you may opt to search for stainless steel gutter prices in the Philippines to see the best one that fits your budget. Bear in mind, though, that some may be more expensive than others. So, comparing colored roof gutter price lists is always a good idea.

When Should You Replace Your Gutters?

Simply put, replace your gutters when they show signs of severe wear and tear. These may include cracks and holes, or when you see leaks. You can climb up your roof to do a visual check. If you see that any of your gutters are sagging or pulling away from the roof, then it’s time to replace them.

Most rain gutters last for about a decade. However, you may need to replace your gutters after a particularly strong typhoon for water leaks and overflows can cause severe damage to rain gutters.

Now that we know the telltale signs of gutter replacement, let’s move on to choosing the right rain gutter for your home. Read on.

Choosing the Right Rain Gutter for Your Home

There are many types of rain gutters currently in the market, and they also come in different styles and colors.

Rain gutters can be made of aluminum, copper, stainless steel, galvanized steel, zinc, and vinyl.

Let’s go through each one so you can have a better idea:

  • Aluminum is one of the most common gutter materials. This is because aluminum offers several advantages. It is lightweight, resistant to corrosion, and can be very cheap. It can also be made in a variety of colors.
  • Gutters can also be made of stainless steel, which is an ideal material due to its unique properties. Stainless steel is an iron alloy that contains Chromium, which prevents corrosion. This means that stainless steel gutters don’t corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel.
  • Another popular material here in the Philippines is galvanized steel. Galvanized steel gutters are coated with a layer of zinc. Though these can be quite strong and are easier to work with than stainless steel. For additional steel/metal protection, go for prepainted galvanized steel gutters.
  • Another option is zinc gutters, which are also durable. These normally do not need any additional painting or coating as zinc is extremely corrosion-resistant. It can also withstand harsh weather.
  • Copper gutters are also becoming popular as they can be attractive. However, copper is a lot more expensive than other metals, which makes copper rain gutters an extremely upscale choice.
  • Other rain gutters are made of vinyl, which can be quite cheap. However, vinyl gutters are not as strong as metal. Vinyl can break down over time due to exposure to sunlight. This is why vinyl gutters are not very popular in the Philippines.

Aside from gutter materials, there are also different types of gutter designs, and each one has a different function.

Here are five of the most common gutters found in the Philippines:

  • Spanish and box gutters are used in the middle of two parallel surfaces, such as the space between parallel roofs. The only difference between the two is that Spanish gutters have curved sides, while box gutters are more angular.
  • Valley gutters are found between two fixed surfaces and in between sloping roofs that meet from different angles.
  • Half-round gutters are shaped like tubes that are cut in half. Since they have curved sides, brackets are sometimes needed to keep them in place.
  • K-style gutters resemble the letter K when viewed from the side. They are very easy to install and don’t require any brackets.
  • Fascia gutters are custom-built and are usually deemed elegant. However, they are prone to rust and leaks.
